    At the recent Torque Converter Rebuilders Association (TCRA) seminar in Coral Gables, Fla., we sat down with the board of directors to discuss the organization, its member and its objectives. We started the conversation with the observation, “There was a time not too long ago when transmission builders would blame the converter for nearly every problem that cropped up after a rebuild.”

    After more than a quarter-century of rebuilding, with self-awareness that this was the time to make the move, and with strong spousal encouragement, Dean Rhodes opened Preferred Transmissions Plus in 2011 in Oregon, Ohio, near Toledo.
  • The transmission lab: UTI Opens N.J. Campus for Training Techs

    Universal Technical Institute has opened enrollment at its new campus in Bloomfield, N.J., with classes to begin in the fall. Students will train for high-tech, in-demand jobs as skilled automotive and diesel technicians. The 108,000-sq.-ft. facility will offer hands-on training for 800 students in programs of 11-18 months. UTI has 12 campuses nationwide.
  • Handling Hard Parts

    Before the days of specialized transmission parts distributors, retail rebuilders in need of hard parts often sourced from local salvage yards. Today, retail rebuilders and full-scale remanufacturing companies can easily place bulk orders or conveniently shop online for their parts needs. Behind the scenes are organizations like Buffalo Engine Components (BEC) in Buffalo, N.Y. The company that started supplying engine cores and components in 1980 has become, the company says, “one of, if not the largest supplier of ‘good used’ and core transmission parts to the aftermarket.”
